Our beloved Ella Graca, doyenne of bridge in Hong Kong and assuredly the rest of Asia, passed away peacefully in the afternoon of Monday, April 30, 2018. For the hundreds of thousands of bridge players this part of the world and beyond who had the good fortune to meet or play against Ella they would have been clearly impressed by this petite lady for her exceptional skills at the table. But we revered her for much more than that.
Without any family ties from her youthful days, members past and present were indeed blessed when Ella steadfastly took on HKCBA and its members as her immediate family. In the decades when the rest of us first started playing bridge, Ella was already an icon of the HKCBA. Over the years, every player including those from other parts of the world was enamoured by her kindness and cheerful demeanor.
In the past decade she became very fond of Taiwanese mahjong and it was a heaven sent opportunity for us to arrange a mahjong game just for Ella every month. Every February her birthday party was arranged and many HKCBA members who rarely showed their faces at other times, came and celebrate with her. Only past January, she had her 100th birthday bash and her first and long-time bridge partner Raymond ‘Golden Harvest’ Chow despite his frailty came along with his daughter Roberta to share fond memories over her birthday cake.
Ella will be long remembered for she loved life and all of us loved her.
