In 1970, a group of teachers and bridge lovers would like to promote bridge as a kind of sports in Hong Kong schools. Hence, the first Rose Bowl 玫瑰盃 (Inter-School Bridge Competition) was organized in the summer of 1970. Mr. Anthony Ching was the Tournament Director and La Salle College was the first Rose Bowl Winner.
In 1980s, students started to take up the administration work and the JSBA (Joint-School Bridge Association) was formed. Different secondary schools would send representatives to the JSBA committee and they elect the posts among themselves. Apart from the Rose Bowl, they organized different year-round events.
After 1999, there were no successors in JSBA. Fortunately, the Rose Bowl continued with the support from some experienced teachers including Mr. Seneca Kwan, Mr. Samuel Chow, Mr. Billy Szeto and Mr. Ronald Hui. In 2005, 65 teams joined the Rose Bowl that summer and St. Paul's College was the winner.
In order to promote bridge effectively among secondary schools, the HKCBA has decided to set up the SSBL (Secondary School Bridge League) as its affiliated organization in 2005. The first SSBL Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on 29th October, 2005. Mr. Tom Leung, Mr. Billy Szeto and Mr. Ronald Hui were appointed as the SSBL teacher advisors.
Currently, the SSBL is mainly organizing the following events in a year: Rose Bowl, Teacher-Student-Alumni Bridge Competition, 2 Team events, 5 Pairs events and some recreational activities like overnight camping and even some bridge beginners' courses for schools. Also, they have regular meetings among the committee members and they led all those events.
